Happy New Year!!!

To ring in the New Year I traveled along with some friends as they took the plunge into the ice cold Atlantic. Coney Island bound. I was absolutely surprised by the amount of people who also had the same idea, but like any other event out at Coney it is madness with a splash of wonderful. Clothes were stripped. Blood warming jumping jacks. Then a run into the water - brrrr just rethinking it. They stayed in the water an impressive 2 minutes and 21 seconds. Some blood warming libations led to an afternoon of dancing that felt like any other day on the boardwalk - except for some were in bathing suits - most in winter coats, hats, gloves, etc. An exhilerating day to wipe away 2009 and move forward full force with 2010!

Steeplechase Fishing Pier - the comedy crew

A ride to the ocean.

We finally had a day that resembled Fall and not Winter so off on the bike I went - Coney Island bound. It wasn't as quiet as I expected it to be. A few of the boardwalk bars and clam shacks were open and the fishing pier was full. No one was catching anything and they all had a theory... this guy. He had two buckets full of these small fish, speerim or whiting or ???. His english was zero or so he said, the comedic fishing crew on the bench watching him thought otherwise. He motioned with his hands that they were to eat, but that is a lot of teeny tiny fish, I'm assuming he's selling them to a store or restaurant. Which scares me.
Just found this link from 2003, I'm guessing he knows more English then he's letting on... looking at those pics, Coney hasn't changed much in 6 years.

Coney Island

The ads say, "Really Fun, Really Open." It was my first trip out to Coney since the demise of Astroland. Thor placed a traveling carnival in its place for the summer. I was intrigued by the old school fascination booths. The Two-Headed baby. Snake Woman. and the one I had to see, "
The Worlds Smallest Woman - small enough you could lift her! She'll even talk to you!". I feel disgusting for paying a buck to talk to a midget. ugh. She just sat there in a tiny recliner playing with her nails, staring at a wall, just tall enough that no one could see in... excepting tips. ugh.
But overall, the park was packed - it was the Siren Festival. We never saw a band play. Took a ride on the Polar Express! (Himalaya-laya-laya-laya!) Ate good-ish food. Sun. Happy.

pheew what a day. today was, technically, Astroland's last stand. It's hard to say what Coney Island will be next year,
but it probably won't be this... I agree that the place needs some updating but condo's are NOT what it needs. Thor equities donated a ton of shirts for the schools so it looked like they were supporting the place, but we all know the truth. The for sale signs are up - the future will be here soon. That future can still be manipulated! Go to
Save Coney and find out what you can do! I have a great video from the last rites with Reverend Billy, Savitri D, and Saint Dick Zigun - once I convert it to web I will post a link.
