The Rabbit Hole.

On Sunday we climbed down a manhole on Atlantic Avenue for a tour of the oldest subway tunnel in the world. I loved watching the faces of those that had no clue what we were doing and hearing their funny comments - yet as soon as they heard what we are doing they wrapped to the end of the line to join us. I mean really, how often do you get this chance! Bob Diamond found the tunnel in 1981, he starts with the history and his personal stories from over the years - how he found it, some adventures in college and of course all the myths and rumors surrounding the tunnel - then lets us loose to take it all in. To add to the mythology of the space, when we got home all the images on my camera were gone. We looked at the photos at lunch then the battery died. The images disappeared too. After a quick freak out and the help from friends, I was able to get them back - I'll blame the ghosts, or the full moon, or perhaps the crazy weather. Whatever it was, I loved wandering around underground with nothing but flashlights. I highly recommend it!

No retouching here. I made the bus driver stop so I could take a pic. Yes, he thought I was crazy too.

Bring on the leaves!

When I was a kid I loved to lay in the field amongst the leaves. Pile em up. Jump on them. Hide and scare Mom & Dad. All of it! So when I saw these kids in the leaves it made my day. I left the house a little lost, unsure where to go or what to do. It's been since August without a job so filling the days is getting harder and harder, thankfully this is New York and there is always something, just need to walk that extra block and say hello. Next thing you know you have 40 kids around you, throwing leaves, laughing and putting a smile back on the face.

Sal's Super Cuts

Everytime I pass the window all I can think of is these
commercials for Italy. Sal was on his last cut but he gave me a second to take a picture. Would of loved more time. I'm not the first person to take a photo of his shop, above his chair and desk were some great portraits taken over the years. They don't make them like this anymore!

They call him "chicky"

although he told me his name is Ryan. I'll run with that. Ryan is someone I've always wanted to photograph but every time I swing by with a camera he isn't there. So today, thankfully, there he was in his window, keeping court on Court Street. At first when I asked to photograph him he shied away, but then a smile appeared and photos of his 6 grandchildren were shown. He was a cobbler back in the day, still lives upstairs and every so often brings his chairs out front. The neighborhood has changed a lot over the years, but Chicky- he's still there.

House of Wax

In my quest to photograph something interesting today I made my way to the Pleasant Stay hotel. Sounds nice right? But no. It is not pleasant. It is a halfway house/SRO/?? for HIV+ men and women. I've tried before but no luck. Today there were some nice people sitting outside with information for the residents and they seemed to think most would be open to having their photograph taken - today, no luck. So around the corner I went and down into the record store. This is Israel and his collection of wax. I have many friends that would love to get their hands on this, for me just made me wonder where those 45's are? I hope they are still in the checkered box in the parents basement like I remember...

Don't be jealous..

There's a little event going on this month called
The Brooklyn Fishing Derby - tonight was the start, all month you fish and enter your best catch for a chance to win. Now, I'm no fisher-girl but I do love a nice smoked fish. I'm going to try to get out there and photo a few of the folks but it's awfully chilly tonight, hope this isn't a sign of what is to come...

A fishing story...

It started with 2 bikes, sunshine, some fishing poles and an apology.
Ended in laughter, burgers, friends and moonlight.
The only fish we saw was the bait, but I prefer my fish from cleaner waters anyways.

I told you it's always an adventure! Last night while out with friends, we met two original Williamsburg folk who just happen to make their own wine - right here in Brooklyn. So of course I asked... and away we went. In a small yard house with a lower cellar, the grapes come to life. We cracked a jug and shared stories of Brooklyn. Smile.
